Founded by Caesar, the old city of Arles displays architectural marvels listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. As well as walking along the maze of narrow streets, you can also visit the great monuments such as the Ampitheatre, the Cryptoporticus, the Alyschamps, and the old Roman baths. Medieval monuments include the Cloitre Saint Trophime church. Many people choose to retrace the steps of Vincent Van Gogh who found much of his inspiration in Arles and in its architecture…
If it's wildlife and nature that appeal to you, you could do no better than just lose yourself in the Camargue National Park which is rich in many species and famous for its birdlife (around 340 species, including the pink flamingo and the grey heron). Splendid horses and cattle of the Camargue can be seen on ranches or "manades" throughout the Camargue. Fifteen km on the other side of Arles is a small mountain range known as Les Alpilles and a typical Provence landscape of rocky olive groves and Cypress trees.
You can explore the picturesque villages of Baux de Provence, Fontvielle, Maussane les Alpilles, Saint Remy de Provence and Eygalieres.
